California Caneberry Production

Tunnel raspberry production. Photo: NARBA.

The North American Raspberry and Blackberry Association recently held their annual meeting in Ventura CA. Both raspberry and blackberry production are BIG in the state. The vast majority of raspberry production is under tunnels, and you will see areas like this in the picture above what it looks like from the road.

Rows of tunnels with raspberries.

Two adjacent tunnels with raspberry plants. One is just beginning to produce fruit, the other will produce fruit in a couple of months.

Tunnels are the preferred (only) way that raspberries are grown in California. If you want to learn more about how they do caneberries out there, here are a few good resources.

This guide has chapters on biology of the crop,  site selection, tunnel management, pests, training, harvest.... lots of good material.

Mark Bolda, is the UCCE Farm Advisor for raspberries and strawberries. He has a useful blog, check it out here
